  copacetic zine 1996-2000
one dot two dot three dot four dot five dot six dot seven

within the pages: a feature on author Francesca Lia Block (of the Weetzie Bat series and more), lots of record and concert reviews, my Winona Ryder updates (titled "Winona Watch") and much much more.

interesting facts: The cover for this issue was printed on hypercolor paper that changes colors when exposed to different temperatures. There were five different colors available.

the copacetic contest for this issue: The wonderful Ivy song "Beautiful" was once used in a Volkswagen commercial. Readers were asked to submit ideas for what products other Ivy songs could be used for. The prize was a beautiful white vinyl limited edition 7" single of the Ivy songs "Get Enough/Drag You Down". The lucky winner was Thad Boss from Seattle, Washington!

my favorite things about this issue: I really liked the hypercolor paper and that many people wrote to me later to say that they picked up Francesca Lia Block's books and were thrilled. That made me happy!

my least favorite things about this issue: The numerous typos, the fact that I switched around pages in my list of favorite Simpsons episodes, my nervousness...

reviews:
"Oohh! The heat-sensitive cover changes colour when you touch it! It's little touches like that that set Copacetic apart from other indie-pop zines. Besides the typical reviews and such, there is plenty of info on editor Janice's obsessions: the Weetzie Bat novels, Winona Ryder, The Simpsons and the internet. Even when it comes to the subject of music, Janice's writing is personal and very sweet, which makes Copacetic really enjoyable to read" --- Elizabeth Chorney, from the fabulous Boy Crazy zine

"Janice is a little unsure of her zine abilities, but she shouldn't be, I say. Her first issue will literally change color in your hands. She talks a little about her life (nosy people want more!) and a lot about her personal obsessions. She exults over Weetzie Bat, Velocity Girl, Pete & Pete and Winona R. Order it and praise her." --- Dave White, from the super-cool zine, Handsome

"Janice set out to create a simple music zine, but by pouring her whole heart and soul into it, she created a zine that's as much a reflection of her as it is of the music she listens to. She starts by telling us how much joy she derived from the Weetzie Bat books, she tried to describe the pleasures of Velocity Girl (which this zine is named after), listed her favorite web pages, praised indie films and reviewed many, many records." --- R. Seth Friedman (oh, my!) from Factsheet Five

"Copacetic gets its name from the first Velocity Girl album, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a fanzine dedicated solely to them (although it wouldn't be so bad if it was half that in future issues). Yes, there is a two-page review of their new album, but there's lots of other music reviews, too (Cocteau Twins, Swirlies, Softies, The Spinanes, Liquorice, Tarnation and more), show reviews (Innocence Mission, Luna, Lisa Loeb and more), a review of Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat series of books, praise for the Peek-A-Boo Records web site, a Winona Ryder shrine (that promises to be a regular) and Janice's 10 most favorite Simpsons episodes. All that and more are inside a cool cover that's heat-sensitive and changes colors when you touch it, breathe on it or leave it in various hot or cold places. A great first issue that looks promising...go get one!" --- Shane (who so kindly gave me some great advice when I was starting out) from Vividzine (R.I.P! sob!)

"You should of seen me when I got this. Rather when I discover the cover changes colors. I ran around telling everyone to put their hand on it. This is so cool. If i made a music only zine it would be exactly like this fine zine. Janice tells about the bands and records she likes (Spinanes, Velocity Girl, etc.) in a personal, friendly writing style. And I like all the bands she writes about! And it is not all music. There is some Simpsons, indie films, and a Winona Ryder update(!). I think the cover should win an award or something." --- Jeffrey Kickbright
