rushmore: original motion picture soundtrack • london records • 1998

In the liner notes for the CD, director Wes Anderson explains that he wanted the soundtrack to feature only songs by The Kinks, because they "played loud, angry, teenage rock songs...and they wore blazers and ties." However, he decided to include other bands from the British Invasion because "they all basically dressed like that."

Although this makes sense (and is pretty funny), it's a good thing he came to that conclusion because this soundtrack wonderfully captures the essence of the film. Sure, there are the rocking 60's pop numbers like "A Quick One While He's Away" by the Who and the incredible "Making Time" by Creation (which could be heard in the trailers, if you remember.) But there are also the softer songs like "A Summer Song" by Chad & Jeremy and "Here Comes My Baby" by Cat Stevens. Even the Kinks' song that was chosen is a softer one ("Nothing In The World Can Stop Me Worrin' Bout That Girl"). There's even some a jazzy track from Zoot Sims and a delicate song from Yves Montand. And together, all these different songs and different styles help narrate the weird, confusing, mixed-up world of a teenager. It's so well done! (janice.98)
