pop the question • book club records • 2006

I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but for some reason, all my favorite bands seem to be comprised of married couples! From our beloved Yo La Tengo to Low and so many other bands, what is it about husband-and-wife songs that make them so excellent?

Well, you might not find the answer to that, but you'll certainly see what I mean when listening to this awesome new compilation CD from Australian label Book Club Records! Pop The Question is the first ever compilation consisting of 25 songs from bands from all over the world, all with married couples in their ranks. Only 100 copies exist of this incredibly limited-edition CD, so you truly shouldn't hesitate to get your hands on a copy, because it's truly an indiepop delight!

Highlights for me include the beautiful "Monday Morning Girl" from The Shermans, and the drone-y breathy "Keepsake" from The Pinks (a song that ends much too soon). Portland's Kanda surprise with a lovely violin-opening to their electro-pop contribution, "List". Boyracer never fail to disappoint, and they turn in the awesomely-noisy "More Than Most". Plus, there's The Owls, The Crabs, and Manchester By The Sea and so many more awesome bands involved!

In fact, the proprietors of Book Club Records are, surprise surprise, a married couple themselves! Recording under the name Sun Hill, they contribute a sweet cover of Stephin Merritt's "Falling Out Of Love (With You)".

So, say "yes" to Pop The Question!!! (janice.04.06)
