mines
the way the wind whips the water • woodson lateral records • 2002

The first time we saw The Mines live, we only caught the last song of their set. But then the second time we caught them, they instantly shot up to being Mike's new fave local band!

Mike handed me this CD the other day and said, "Check them out! They sound very Sea & Cake-like". At the mention of one of my all-time favorite bands, I arched my eyebrow at Mike with disbelief. But, Mike was right (as always)! The first track, "Solo Machine", is very early-TSAC with awesome drumming from Aaron Bolton. And then, "Swing Your Miss" has a strong Pinback feel to it, especially with the heavy bassline from Chad Hanson. Another track I keep hitting the "repeat" button on is "Peach to Blue" which has a real dance-y New Order/later-Q & Not U-ish feel to it.

So, it's a great CD! However, the only tracks that don't really do it for me are the last two. While the rest of the album is fairly upbeat (not including the acoustic "Thom Yorke's Driving"), "Schoolboy" is very moody and somber, and then "The Greatest Ponyride of All Time" is a blippy, spacey instrumental. Nice, but I usually skip 'em. (janice.05.04)
