fly seville
carousel • sealed fate records • 1999

I can't remember what made me pick up this cd, but all it took was a peek at the liner notes to see that they thank my friend Jeffrey Kickbright, and "Carousel" was mine. And I could not be happier about that...I have been listening to this cd pretty regularly since I bought it in the summer of 1999, and considering how many cds Mike and I have bought during that time, the fact that I keep coming back to The Fly Seville is pretty remarkable! This is just so amazing. I shake my head in awe at this cd. The songs are so well-crafted. They almost make me think of late 70's rock, with the way the songs are so melancholy and the melodies twist and turn, and then towards the end, the music swells up and Jesse's sultry voice just glides up the curve. All members are incredible musicians, and despite their "traditional" band make-up, they totally kick butt with their instruments. They're amazing. Colin's bass adds so much dimension to Jesse's melodies, and Stacy's soaring violin crashes through it, all punctuated with Randy's dramatic drumming. They are all so talented and this cd sounds so incredibly professional. On top of that, Jesse has this amazing expressive, non-whiny voice that complements these songs perfectly. (I'm so tired of indie rock boys who sing through their noses...) And his lyrics are so intimate and yet abstract and just plain smart. (Ex: "Like a dog's chin on a windowsill/ It's dangerous...") If anyone knows if there's going to be a new album soon, let me know! (janice.00)
