bellafea
family tree e.p. • pidgeon english records • 2005

Bellafea is a stripped-down girl-boy guitar/drums duo a la the Spinanes or a gender-reversed White Stripes, although the songwriting bent goes a bit more in the direction of Cat Power or early PJ Harvey. I get a bit of a early-90s, post-art-school kind of vibe--the instrument credits on one track include typewriter and slide projector. The recordings are raw and immediate, befitting the emo, emo lyrics. Singer/guitarist Heather McEntire even ends up sounding like a female Conor Oberst on the final track. It's nervy and mostly ear-catching, although my main reaction to this disc is that the emotional drama on display here is very much that of someone in their early 20s, and that I'm really glad that I've outgrown that sort of thing.
