starring parker posey, josh hamilton • comedy/drama • 1997 • rated r

plot summary: Parker plays a young girl obsessed with Former First Lady Jackie Onassis, to the point of dressing like her. When her twin brother (Hamilton) comes home with a surprise fiancee in tow for Thanksgiving 1983 (incidentally, the 20 year anniversary of Kennedy's assassination aaand the day their father "left" their mother), "Jackie" (as she's called) can barely contain her jealousy, setting off a complex love triangle, or square...oh yeah, did I forget to mention? Jackie and her brother, Marty, have an incestuous relationship that begun when they were teenagers.

who should see this movie: Parker Posey fans, as she gives a fabulous performance, one that won her an award at Sundance that year; people who enjoy seeing plays, since this was adapted from one written by Wendy MacLeod, and frankly, still feels like a play.

who should NOT see this movie: Are you still reeling from that sentence I wrote earlier? Uh, yeahhh, don't bother with this one. Also, fair warning: this movie has both the horror of Freddie Prinze Jr. and Tori Spelling...

why tori?: 'Cause Daddy Spelling footed the bill for this indie flick, that's why!

directed by: Mark Waters, who also directed 2004's Mean Girls, and who is also the brother of Daniel Waters, who wrote Heathers.

This was a very weird, puzzling movie. I've seen it twice now (once when I was younger, and then recently 'cause I'm on a Parker Posey kick), and I still don't completely understand it. But the dialogue is very sharp and funny, and yes, I delight in watching Jackie torment her brother's ditzy fiancee, played by Spelling. Very odd film. Definitely not for everyone. (janice.11.04)
