crushworthy: brian topp from the tv show “spaced”

Happy New Year and all that! One of my resolutions is to try and write here more, although I fear that may have been one of my resolutions last year, too, and obviously that didn’t go very well!

But anyway, one of the things I got myself for Christmas was the complete DVD collection of one of the best TV shows of all time, BBC’s “Spaced.” There are tons of awesome bonus features, like commentary from Patton Oswalt! And of course, commentary from the cast members including Mark Heap, who plays one of my TV crushes, Brian Topp, the weirdo artist who lives downstairs from the main characters Tim (Simon Pegg) and Daisy (Jessica Stevenson). I’m not really sure why he became a TV crush, I guess it’s just the whole tortured artist thing.

But the real life Mark Heap? Seems so grumpy on these commentaries. When he does talk that is, which isn’t very often… But maybe he’s just being overpowered by the energetic, loquacious trio of Pegg, Stevenson and director Edgar Wright… Plus, he keeps making grumpy remarks about puppies and kittens.

To make up for it, here’s a clip of Mark Heap from the excellent old BBC sketch show “Big Train” (also featuring Simon Pegg!) featuring adorable puppies! Take that, Mr. Heap!

goodbye guy

I was so sad to read that actor Roberto Gari, who played Guy Blank on “Strangers With Candy", passed away recently. Here’s more info, quoted directly:

Roberto Gari, an actor with several Broadway credits who also had a career as an artist, died Jan. 22 in Manhattan of a heart attack. He was 87.

Mr. Gari, born in Brooklyn, was on the stage by the age of four, appearing in vaudeville under the name of Jackie Hayes. He danced with Vera-Ellen in the 1944 Broadway production of A Connecticut Yankee and later landed the lead role in the same production. His other Broadway credits included Sadie Thompson and Nellie Bly. The latter was produced by Eddie Cantor, his father-in-law.

In between his stage debut and Broadway debut, Mr. Gari attended the Art Students League, studying under Will Barnett and Ethel Schwabacher. His work was vaguely impressionistic and often took popular figures and subjects as its subject. His most famous work was the well-known painting of Judy Garland that was on display in the lobby of New York’s Palace Theatre for decades. It now rests in the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of New York.

In recent years, Mr. Gari, possessed of a long, angular face, prominent nose and droopy white moustache, received much work in prominent print ads, and played Amy Sedaris’ dead, rigor mortis-stricken father Guy Blank on Comedy Central’s “Strangers With Candy.” Mr. Gari’s marriage to Janet Cantor ended in divorce. In addition to his son Brian, of Manhattan, Mr. Gari is survived by his daughter Amanda Abel of Sherman Oaks, CA, and granddaughter Allison Abel of Sherman Oaks.

I think it’s sweet that he has a separate section for “Strangers With Candy” on his website, even though he had no lines on that show whatsoever. There’s a cute pic of him and Amy on his site, too.

zooey + the simpsons = yay!

How cute! My BFF Zooey Deschanel is gonna be on my favorite show of all time “The Simpsons”! Here’s the scoop, quoted directly, ‘cause I am a lazy, lazy girl…

Before Zooey Deschanel stars with human cartoon Jim Carrey in the upcoming romantic comedy Yes Man, she’s starring in a cartoon. The actress/singer recorded a guest spot on Fox’s “The Simpsons", playing a farm girl who helps Bart rescue a calf from death. The episode — which airs in April — sees the Bartman developing a crush on Deschanel’s character, and let’s just say that a marriage proposal may factor into this animal-saving situation. In other Simpsons guest-casting news, the recently Golden-Globed Glenn Close will reprise her role as Homer’s hippie-fugitive mom, Mona: In a May episode, Mother Simpson shows up unannounced at the family’s doorstep and declares that her activist days are over and that this time she’s staying for good.

source: Hollywood Insider

Oh, the Mother Simpson episodes always warm my heart and make me cry… But anyway, the movie “Yes Man” is based on a book by this really funny writer from England named Danny Wallace. I read it last year, and loved it so much I hunted down his other book “Join Me", which is equally hilarious. Plus, the movie version is being directed by Peyton Reed. I’m very much looking forward to it.

congratulations mary lynn!

Aww! The super-awesome Mary Lynn Rajskub is pregnant! Here’s the scoop, quoted directly from the source, because I am lazy.

Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays computer whiz Chloe O’Brian on Fox’s “24″, is pregnant, she tells PEOPLE.

Rajskub, 36, and her live-in boyfriend Matthew Rolph, 27, a personal trainer, are expecting their first child at the end of the summer.

“With the strike going on, I had to keep busy!” Rajskub jokes. “We are thrilled and couldn’t be more excited.”

Rajskub recently attended the Sundance Film Festival promoting Sunshine Cleaning, in which she costars opposite Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. On Friday, Rajskub will make an appearance walking in the Red Dress Fashion Show to benefit The Heart Truth in New York.

I love you, Mary Lynn, but I will never watch “24″.

Also, we have even more adorable products in stock from Seattle’s own Matthew Porter. How does he do it?!

I’m watching “Project Runway” right now and Christian and Chris are just so freaking adorable together, I wish they would get paired up for every challenge. Or maybe Bravo can give them their own spin-off, please. Like, they’re roommates… like Oscar and Felix! I’d so watch!

jpod on tv

I had heard rumblings that the 2006 novel jPod by my favorite author Douglas Coupland was being turned into a TV show, but I had no idea it was actually finished and on the air already!

Alas, it’s only showing on CBC, natch. We get that channel on cable, but we are only 3 hours away from Canada. I don’t know if every city gets CBC as part of their cable package.

I was looking at the casting online, and must say, I’m greatly amused by the casting of Alan Thicke, playing the main character’s Dad. I guess, sure, he is a Canadian, but like most people, I just associate him so much with “Growing Pains". I’m a little annoyed by the casting of Kaitlin, because I never imagined her character as a bubbly-looking blonde, but maybe the actress will win me over. And I’m thrilled that the character of Kam Fong wasn’t written out! (Kam is an underground drug smuggler, and I’m glad Canadians agree that there is a place for black market smugglers in a comedic series.)

I have yet to watch an episode, but I have my DVR fired up and ready to go. Apparently, the show debuted on January 8th, but the second episode airs tonight, so I’m not too far behind. Anyway, fingers crossed that it’s good. Douglas himself will apparently appear in episodes, playing himself! That’s a good sign, right?

jon benjamin makes me happy

One of the best things about 2007 was the cartoon “Lucy, Daughter of the Devil” finally aired on Adult Swim.

I’ve already raved about this show on this website, but in case you missed it, it’s by the team who brought you “Home Movies", and the cast includes such awesomeness as Jon Benjamin, Melissa Bardin Galsky, Jon Glaser, Eugene Mirman, and Todd Barry.

How can it get any better? Oh, let me tell you… when Jon Benjamin sings. I’m pretty sure nothing in the world can make me laugh harder.

And now, you can download all the songs from the show, including ones where Jon doesn’t sing, if you’re into that. The website also features commentary and nifty pics from Loren Bouchard, the show’s creator and composer.

Okay, I’m going to go listen to Jon singing “I Know What Boys Like” again.

This is such a treat! Actor Richard Beymer, who played Benjamin Horne, has shared some behind-the-scenes photos he took during the filming of the series finale of “Twin Peaks". His photography is absolutely stunning. The portraits are so well-done, and I just love seeing cute Mr. Lynch at work. Wow.

yup, still scary.

Someone mentioned that as a child, they were freaked out when Gordon on “Sesame Street” was replaced. Like, one day he had hair, and the next day he was bald. And it got me thinking about things on TV that freaked me out as a kid, and immediately, I thought of the United Artists logo they used to play before showing “Pink Panther” cartoons. So I looked it up on YouTube, and YES IT’S STILL CREEPY.

Speaking of Gordon, Mike and I met Roscoe Orman, the actor who plays him, the other weekend in Portland!

He was ridiculously kind, as you can probably imagine. I think he thought I was a teenager though, and I couldn’t bear to tell him I was actually 31.

following up on human giant

So, to follow up on my Human Giant experience, there’s a neat post-marathon interview with Giant-eer Paul Scheer (hey that rhymes) here. It bummed me out that MTV rejected their ideas of re-airing old shows, but they still got to show the Aphex Twin video for “Come to Daddy” and have it projected on that enormous screen in Times Square. So they win.

And if you really really really want a copy of the whole 24 hr marathon, there’s a fella on this message board selling a 10-vhs set of the thing. (But he’s only offering it to 20 people, so act quickly.)

okay so maybe new york isn’t all that bad

Yup, as Mike reported, I spent most of yesterday at the MTV studios as part of the live audience for Human Giant’s 24 Hour Marathon. I didn’t end up staying the whole 24 hours though. You can’t tell, but the MTV studios are FREEZING COLD. I wore an adorable Supayana top to the event, and you can’t even see it ‘cause my hoodie was zipped up almost the entire time. Darn. Plus, by the end of the day, I was starving. There were snack foods scattered around the “dorm room"-esque studio as set dressing, and by the end of the day, they were pretty much gone because me and the other kids kept eating them. Here’s a quick list of some of my favorite things from the day (in no particular order):

1) Trish Goff
Trish Goff has been my favorite fashion model for… cripes, the past ten years? (I’m slightly embarassed by that.) Anyway, the last time I saw her get work, it was for those embarassing Macy’s commercials they kept running during the last season of “Project Runway". So, I was delighted to walk up Times Square and see her lovely face on huge billboards for Dana Buchman. Yay Trish!

2) Ted Leo
He was the one musical guest I really wanted to see, so I’m glad he performed during the daytime. Thankfully you can’t see me in the television footage, ‘cause I was grinning like a huge idiot. I loved his little improv’ed save during “Me & Mia". Ted is cute. And nice.

3) Eric Slovin
Both Slovin and Allen were there, but interestingly, Allen stayed mostly off-screen except in one bit where he “stole” a woman’s purse. Also, interesting to note: even though Allen was not on screen, he kept changing clothes. I was there for about 6-7 hours, and I saw him in several slightly different outfits. How Beyonce of him! But, really, the man who has my heart is Eric Slovin, who enthusiastically donned a Leprechaun costume and was able to keep his energy up for each and every performance. Seriously, there was none of that tongue-in-cheek-hipster-crap from him. He was so 100% game. He rocks.

Other highlights include Rob Riggle (he was awesome!), Todd Barry, Eugene Mirman, and Fabrice Fabrice (aka Nick Kroll). Apparently, Patton Oswalt was there, but sadly, I didn’t see him. Same with Zach Galifianakis, boo. I wish I could’ve been there when Will Arnett, Michael Cera, and John Krasinski were all there, but I was already home (and fed, and warm) by then.

Amy Sedaris Alert
The awesome Katie of amysedarisrocks.com reports the following:

Amy is scheduled to appear on Conan O’Brien on May 22nd and Letterman on June 7th.

She’s also got tons of links to interviews with my hero, so go check it out.

As for Amy being in the new Shrek movie, I am sooo on the fence about it. I mean, I sat through Chicken Little just because she did a voice in the film, so quality is obviously not an issue for me. And this one’s got Amy Poehler in it too, who I also adore, but… (shudder) … the Mike Myers/Cameron Diaz combo just makes my stomach hurt. I’m such a snob.

colbert news!

NEW YORK - First “Fake News,” now “Truthiness.” The publisher of Jon Stewart’s million-selling “America (The Book)” is releasing a book by Stephen Colbert.

“This book will have the same noble goal as my television show: to change the world one factual error at a time,” Colbert said Tuesday in a statement issued by Warner Books.

Colbert’s book, currently untitled, is scheduled to come out in the fall of 2007. Colbert, a longtime fixture on Stewart’s “Daily Show,” now hosts “The Colbert Report,” also aired on Comedy Central.

Colbert also has a background with words. He contributed to “America (The Book),” co-authored “Wigfield” with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello and is credited with coining “truthiness,” named Word of the Year for 2005 by the American Dialect Society.

“Truthiness” is the quality of stating concepts one wishes or believes to be true, rather than the facts.

Dag, there has been so much awesome news lately! And if you wanna read a cute interview with Stephen’s “Wigfield” co-author, Amy, check out these pics (you have to click them and make ‘em bigger to read the text).

sunday night tidbits!

I hope everyone is winding down their exciting weekends? Or coming home from SXSW? We’ve just been doing our usual routine of work, work, working, but I came across some cool news I thought I’d share:

Reno 911! is coming to a theater near you for “Reno 911: Miami"! And it’s almost like a reunion of The State with the boys from Stella appearing in the film. More details await you here, but no word yet on a release date…

• Here’s another film to add to your “must see” list: my former sk8-boy crush Spike Jonze is bringing the classic children’s book Where The Wild Things Are to the silver screen!!! Holy crap. And helping adapt the book into a screenplay? None other than, um, Dave Eggers! Wow, whoa, weird! A few more details can be found here, but again, no release date yet…

• Also, you may have heard that Futurama is returning to your TV sets…well, sadly, Billy West reported tonight that he got some wrong information, and there will not be 26 new episodes coming to television. Don’t be too sad though, because the DVD’s are still in the works.

Wednesday, January 4 2006

good news, everybody!

I’m not sure what the original source is, but I found this reprinted online:

What has Stewie Griffin wrought? How about a Bender rebirth? Following the hugely successful resurrection of Family Guy, Fox execs are reportedly in talks to bring Futurama back from the dead.

The studio has begun talks to revive the Emmy-winning animated series and produce a limited number of new episodes, thanks to a resurgence in the show’s popularity on DVD and in reruns, Variety reports.

Reps for 20th Century Fox have declined to comment on the news, but Variety says initial negotiations have begun.

If revived, it’s unclear exactly which network would air the new episodes. While Fox housed the original series, the show found new life once reruns began showing on the Cartoon Network. Comedy Central subsequently snapped up the off-air rights and will exclusively air the repeats beginning in 2008.

The brainchild of Simpsons mastermind Matt Groening and writer David X. Cohen, Futurama debuted on Fox in March 1999. The series revolved around Fry, a pizza delivery boy, who is accidentally frozen for a thousand years. He wakes up in the year 3000 and befriends sassy one-eyed pilot Leela and cranky robot Bender, who both work for an intergalactic delivery service run by a distant nephew of Fry’s.

After five seasons and three Emmys, including the 2002 prize for Best Animated Series, Futurama was shuttered in August 2003.

Should the show make its way back to the airwaves, it would follow in the footsteps of another Fox cult ‘toon, Family Guy.

The latter show was brought back in 2004, thanks to robust rerun ratings and staggeringly high DVD sales–the show ranks as the fourth-biggest TV-series seller ever. Since its comeback, Fox has produced two more seasons and the direct-to-DVD movie Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story.

For Futurama to return, the studio would need to re-sign the show’s production team, as well as voice stars Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio.

In the meantime, Futurama lives on in comic-book form, with all-new stories continuing to be released by Groening’s Bongo Comics.

Count me in as one of those who finally embraced Futurama on DVD and in re-runs. I remember when it first aired, I was so immersed in my Simpsons-fandom that I hardly gave Futrama a second glance. Oh, how wrong I was!

But on the other hand, if Futurama comes back, I hope it doesn’t eventually go drastically downhill like The Simpsons has this past season. Painful!

vote for kexp!

I just wanted to let you guys know about the PLUG: Independent Music Awards, which just announced its nominations this morning! And the radio station where I work has been nominated for a couple of categories! PLUS, Lauren Gregg’s super-cute video for Of Montreal’s “Wraith Pinned To The Mist (And Other Games)” has been nominated! You have to vote in atleast five categories in order for your vote to count, but that shouldn’t be too hard…well, actually, just choosing ONE out of ALL the awesome choices is kinda hard! (The “Record Label Of The Year” category? GULP!) The Album Art/Packaging of the Year category is another toughie, but EWWW! No voting for Goblin Cock! I just reviewed their CD the other day, and called them out on their icky cover art.

But if you wanted to vote for my station, KEXP, in any of these categories, that’d be swell!

College/Non-Comm Radio Station Of The Year
KEXP, Seattle, WA

Internet Radio Station of the Year
kexp.org

Also, Sonic Boom Records, Seattle, WA should definitely win for “Record Store of the Year"!

And since I promised to post this pic many moons ago, here it finally is, me with Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, as written about all the way back here.

And now it’s time for the one-two punch of The Daily Show w/ Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report…bliss!

On an entirely different note of obsession, if you missed the season premiere of America’s Next Top Model (like I did!), there’s going to be an encore airing tomorrow night, to get you ready for the next episode which airs on Wednesday. Dag, I love that freakin’ show…

And on that bombshell … Alan Partridge, the movie?

Owen Gibson, media correspondent
The Guardian

A-ha! Alan Partridge, the tragicomic local radio DJ who harbours delusions of the big time, could make it in Hollywood after all. After a brief appearance in this year’s Comic Relief, Steve Coogan wants to put his radio and TV persona on the silver screen. Coogan, who has forged a film career with 24 Hour Party People, The Parole Officer and Around the World in 80 Days, has said he will only play Partridge in one-offs and specials.

Plans for the film are in their “early stages” but “the will is there” to make a film based on the hapless Partridge, according to a spokeswoman for Coogan’s Baby Cow production company. “It’s in the pipeline but we don’t have any definite date.” Coogan’s co-writer Armando Iannucci, who directed the TV series, said he was not involved with plans for a film.

“My personal view is that I’ve taken him as far as he can go and I’d rather leave him where he is - having a nervous breakdown in a bath in Dundee. But it’s up to Steve what he wants to do with it and I wish him well,” Iannucci said yesterday.

The character has appeared in various guises since his debut as a sports reporter with a patchy knowledge of his subject matter in Radio 4’s On the Hour in 1991. From the success of the spoof radio chatshow Knowing Me, Knowing You, Partridge progressed to the small screen. He brought his inimitable broadcasting style to Chris Morris’s news satire, The Day Today, before going on to host a televised version of his chatshow.

In the fictional world of Partridge, the show was cancelled after one series when he shot dead a guest in the final show. He next turned up in two series of I’m Alan Partridge, a mockumentary that followed his humiliating return to East Anglia, where he lived first in a Travelodge and then a caravan as he tried to rebuild his career.

Apart from his toe-curling graveyard slot on Radio Norwich he failed to get back on the BBC. During the two-year gap between series, Partridge became “clinically fed up", culminating in a breakdown when he drove to Dundee in his bare feet and gorged on chocolate.

Oh. My. God…

  • Here is a really cute, quick interview with the adorable Jon Stewart.
  • Here is an almost-unbelievable e-mail exchange between Judd Apatow (from the beloved Freaks & Geeks) and some guy from That 70’s Show (of which I’m not a fan). I mean, “Get cancer"?! What a horrible, ugly, tasteless, deplorable person…
  • And we’ve got an awesome interview and review coming up soon! :D

    *yawn*

np: “The Surreal Life” on VH-1…i’m eagerly anticipating the new episode…i am such a geek!

You know, people used to tell me that if you do what you love for a living, after a while, it stops being fun because now it’s work, blah blah blaaah. I’m just so glad that hasn’t happened to me yet (*KNOCK ON WOOD!*). I’ve got yards of interfacing in the sewing room right now just waiting to be turned into cute new purses…I’ll put some of them on the site, and then some are going to local boutiques here in Seattle. Plus, we have a darling new artist aboard, too, whose collection will be up next week…you will flip at how cute her handmade pins are! :) And we’re always looking for new talent, so if you make stuff, click here

But I am very very tired. So much is going on. First off, our beloved Jeremy starts his internship at 911 Media Arts tomorrow! Eeeee! And our darling friends Craig & Akira left for two weeks in Italy on Saturday! Eeee again!

I’ll try and write more tomorrow when I’m feeling more awake… :P

np: “What Should You Do?” — one of those scary shows on Lifetime about women in peril that Mike prefers I don’t watch ‘cause I get all paranoid…

We just got back from seeing Todd Barry live. Now we’re gonna watch some “Strangers With Candy". Life is good. More soon.

np: I’m not sure! Something on BBC America…

Alrighty, my five beloved gay guys from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy are coming to the area where I grew up, Dallas/Fort Worth! And, oh heavens, I know a lot of ya’ll could use their help!!! ;) (Gee, Malcolm, too bad the Star-Telegram already hooked you up! *cough!cough!*)

They’ll be there in the summer (and why they chose the summertime to come visit D/FW is SO beyond me!), so hurry and get your applications in!

In more Queer Eye news, new episodes start Tuesday, June 1. And, yes, you asked for it, and you got it: Queer Eye for the Straight Girl is in the works. If you live in the L.A. area, keep checking the Queer Eye website for details on how you can be on the show!

By the way, I’m really sad about my favorite decorator, Thom, shilling for Pier One. On one hand, he pushed out icky ol’ Kirstie Alley and her flowy Indian garbs. On the other hand, one word: wicker.

And on that note, has anyone else seen those beer commercials with copacetic person Bob Odenkirk in them? Ewwww! Oh, Bob! Did Run, Ronnie, Run really do that badly? I’m sorry I didn’t see it in the theaters and now you have to lower yourself to doing beer commercials. I know you have kids to put through college and all. But still. It saddens me to see him cheapen himself this way! :(

np: “An Angel at My Table” — a wonderful Jane Campion film on IFC

So, yay yay yay! There are new reviews up on the site!

Stereolab show review from earlier this month
    • Film reviews for the new Coen Brothers movie The Ladykillers and a Chinese movie I saw on TV called Quitting.
    • A book review for Janice Dickinson’s biography No Lifeguard on Duty.
    • And since I’m sure many others are afraid to try it too, here’s my review of McDonald’s McVeggie sandwich.

    np: KEXP online

Dang, I can’t believe I like this Modest Mouse song…it’s a single from their upcoming CD called “Float On” and it’s just so cute and happy. But ordinarily, Modest Mouse kinda put me off. I like a smattering of their stuff, but for the most part, Isaac’s vocals can just get way too screechy for my tastes. As Mike put it, “he sounds so angry.” We both then concluded he can sometimes sound like Beavis.

Okay, so I need someone’s help and I’m kind-of embarassed about it. Yesterday afternoon, I happened to catch the 1979 Bette Midler movie “The Rose” on TV. Yeah, I know. But I had never seen it before, and I had read Bette was nominated for an Oscar for her performance, and I do love watching rock stars crash-and-burn on shows like “VH1’s Behind The Music” or “The E! True Hollywood Story”. I thought it might be interesting. Instead, it was just kinda confusing. Has anyone seen this movie and could help me? I tried searching Bette Midler fansites for some answers, but not even I have that much patience.

I’ll put my questions in spoiler tags as to not ruin the movie for anyone who has never seen it. [[So, the movie starts and there’s a group of people looking at a corner. And the corner has a bunch of magazine cut-outs on the walls of James Dean and bunches of other people. And there’s a photographer present who prepares to take a picture of a black and white photograph of what I assumed was a young Rose? And then the movie starts…]] and this part of the movie is pretty standard Hollywood-fare: she plays concerts, she gets drunk, she’s on her tour plane… Okay, but then [[at the end, after she collaspses at her homecoming concert, they go back to that group of people looking at the corner, and one by one, they turn and walk away, until the last person left (dressed in an uniform) turns out a light and walks away]]…roll credits.

So, who the heck are those people??? [[Are those supposed to be her parents? Was the guy in the uniform her AWOL-gone-limo-driver boyfriend? Where is this corner they’re looking at? At first I thought it might be backstage at the concert, but why would she have this collage up backstage? What’s the significance of the collage?]] I can’t believe it’s still driving me crazy, but if anyone has seen this movie and can help me, I will be so very very grateful!!!!! : )

And then after that, I actually found myself watching the 2001 Mariah Carey odyssey “Glitter” Yeah, I know. Now I have an extremely high tolerance for cheesy pop music movies. I’ve seen “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: The Movie” many times. I’ve also seen “Give My Regards to Broadstreet” many times. And I love Olivia Newton-John’s “Xanadu". But “Glitter"? Hmm, yikes. It’s not even bad on an enjoyable level! But I love how as the boyfriend gets meaner and meaner, his shirt seems to unbutton further and further down.

This week’s issue of The Stranger has an interesting article about how Austin, TX is the “live music capital of the world” and Seattle just can’t compare. The first time I read the article, I got a little defensive. After all, Mike and I moved here to Seattle from Austin, and one of the reasons why is because we found the Austin music scene to be not quite all it was cracked up to be. But then I re-read the article this morning and see that it’s more about economics, and they might have a point there, because I honestly haven’t followed the political side of the music scene as much as I probably should. But, on a personal level, when I lived in Austin, I often found myself reeling with jealousy when I found out that bands like St. Etienne and Badly Drawn Boy were playing shows in Seattle, but there were no Austin dates to be found on their tour schedule. It just seems that, for us anyways, more bands we like make it to the east and west coasts, but not the south, so we were much happier when we came out here. Now we can’t even manage to squeeze in all the shows we want to go to! Sometimes we have to leave one and club and run to another to see all the bands we want to see! (And that reminds me: in the article, the writer complains about how the clubs in Seattle are scattered around the different neighborhoods, while in Austin, all the clubs are pretty much centralized on 6th Street… well, lemme tell you, can you imagine what the parking situation is like? Yuck!) (Oh! And another thing! The article states: “Consider: Unlike in Texas, where minors can walk right into most clubs and bars, Washington State politicians “protect” kids by locking them out of clubs until they’re 21.” What?! When I lived in Austin, kids were not welcome in clubs and bars?! [Okay, I just checked the website for Emo’s, a club Mike and I used to go to all the time when we lived there, and apparently they are now all ages all the time! Fancy that! But other clubs still seem to have a 21+ policy…] …but here in Seattle, we have so many awesome all-ages shows! There’s the super-rad Vera Project, the awesome Old Fire House, and the Stranger even has a special section where it lists out the all-ages shows. Back when I lived in Austin, we didn’t have anything like that!)

I guess I’m ranting a bit here, but I just wanted to conclude that the grass is not always greener on the other side! Don’t get me wrong, Austin is so, so super-cool and fun, and I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the city! But Seattle has an awesome music scene, too. Okay, I am totally ranting… ; ) I better just shut up now. Happy weekend everyone!!! : )

    np: “The Surreal Life” marathon

I can’t believe I’m watching this show…it kinda makes my stomach hurt, like eating too much junk food. Last year, it was actually sorta sweet. This year it’s just too smutty…and surprisingly, I’m not referring to porn star Ron Jeremy! (Although the “party” episode hasn’t aired yet, so I might be eating my words after tonight…)

So, oh my lordy lordy! As I mentioned late last month, now that I’m done with the shop update, I’m playing catch-up with all the reviews I’ve been getting behind on…well, geez louise, do I have an update for you! I’m finally all caught up on my concert reviews, going all the way back to July 2003! Yikes! Sadly, some of the reviews are a little, uh, “lacking” in content, simply because it’s been so long and I’ve forgotten what happened by this point! In fact, some shows I had to dismiss and not write reviews for at all. But, join me, if you will, for a look back at some shows in 2003, and a couple of reviews from last week! :)

    Slomo Rabbit Kick/Sorry (January 29, 2004)• Ted Leo + The Pharmacists (January 23, 2004)
    Kristin Hersh (November 19, 2003)
    Stars (November 14, 2003)
    Hem (July 31, 2003)
    Evening Lights/The Frenchmen (July 17, 2003)
    Radio Dept./Pipas (July 16, 2003)

    (Whew!)

In these concert reviews you’ll find tons of gorgeous pictures taken by Mike (and a couple of cruddy pictures that I took…sorry!). Mike just did an update to his awesome Indie Rock Photo Gallery (including this incredible pic of the recent Slomo Rabbit Kick show, shown here), so go check it out! :)

I’m actually super-tired right now. Mike and I spent the day over at our friends’ house, helping them makeover their new home. And holy macaroni… The whole experience truly made me wonder about the authenticity of home makeover shows like “Trading Spaces” and “Area” and the like! Seriously, how the heck do those people remodel their homes in mere weekends? And on these shows, they often use “family and friends” to do the work. Well, we were family and friends…why didn’t we finish this weekend?! Is it all a sham? If so, then I feel seriously misled! My friends have two weeks to get their house finished up before they have to move out of their old house so the new family can move in…I wonder if it’s too late to call HG-TV. ; )

And, in other news, I finished my second scarf this weekend!!! I love the “Thick & Quick” yarn! I can’t believe I finished the scarf in just one week! Whoo!!! I’ll post pictures of it once I can get Jeremy over here to model it for the camera. ; ) So, now I gotta think of a new project to do…I’d like to do a hat, but I’m not sure how! There’s a pattern for a cute ribbed hat in the “Stitch & Bitch” book that I’d like to try. Cross your fingers for me! ; )

So, bye for now, and stay tuned for our next batch of reviews coming soon soon soon!!! : )

np: “Reckless” — this really awesome wicked dark comedy from the 80’s starring Mia Farrow

So, Tobin says “MEOW!” :) and good morning! I’ve got lots of nifty info to share, so let’s go!

    • The charming boys of Stella Comedy (that’s Michael Ian Black, Michael Showwalter and David Wain from MTV’s The State) have some new video clips up on their website! Check it out here.

    • Remember that great show “Freaks & Geeks”? Well, if you have a lot of money, they’re now taking pre-orders for a limited edition 8-DVD set of the show! It’s a little too expensive for this girl’s pocketbook, but it’s so jam-packed with bonus stuff that if I had $120 laying around, I would buy it in a blink of an eye! If you have $120 laying around, click here for more info! ;)

This had both me and Mike entranced the entire time! It could not be more adorable!!! :D

So, this weekend, I am proud to say that I finished my first “real” scarf! : ) YAY! I say my first “real” scarf because really, the first scarf I made was so sad it shouldn’t even count. ; ) This is the first thing I’ve knitted that can actually be worn outside the house, LOL! ; ) I used Wool-Ease Lion Brand Yarn in Forest Green Heather 180 and Mushroom 403. I used size 5 needles, so it should come as no surprise that this scarf took me about a month to knit!!! : )

So, now I’m working on a scarf for Jeremy, and I’m using the Lion Brand “Thick & Quick” yarn and big ol’ honkin’ size 10 needles, LOL! : ) ‘Cause I’m thinking, if Jer’s gonna get any use out of this scarf, I need to get it done before spring hits! And to make it more interesting, I’m trying ribbing…it’s so fun! I love the whole “knit, knit, purl, purl” business!!! I hope Jeremy likes the scarf… I’ve already warned these boys that if they lose their scarves I will quite simply have to hurt them both. ; ) (Awww, they know I’m teasing!)

Anyway, now that I’m done with the shop redesign, I’m gonna get back on schedule with the reviews and stories and stuff! : ) Sorry I got so behind on ‘em…the holidays threw me off and then the shop threw me off, but I’m back on, promise. Stay tuned for fun announcements and stuff! : ) Bye for now!!! : )

np: nothing…just the sounds of my Cherry Coke fizzin’ and poppin’

Lotsa interesting news tidbits, so let’s get to it!

Low to be on Some MTV2 Show
I’ve never even seen this show, but here’s the news: On Thursday, December 4th, MTV & MTV2’s show “Advance Warning” with host Jim Shearer will be coming to Mr. Small’s Funhouse to film their 12/14 episode. The crew will be throughout Mr. Small’s Funhouse during the afternoon and picking up some crowd/performance shots that night at the Low concert. The show spotlights artists before they break, catering to an audience outside your typical MTV demographic. The show featuring Mr. Small’s is set to air on MTV on 12/14 at 11:30 (time subject to change on initial broadcast) and rebroadcasted on 12/22 at 9pm on MTV2.

You can read more about it at his site located here.

    Low on WFMU
Yes, on Monday, December 22nd from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Mimi and Alan are gonna be on Irene Trudel’s show performing a live set of their holiday songs from the “Christmas” album! Le sigh! More details await you here. (And, yes, Zak is still in the band, do not fret! He’s just in L.A. right now…)

    New (sorta)-Ida Project!
To the shock of many, Dan & Liz from Ida with Warren (His Name is Alive) have teamed up with none other than Lisa Loeb (!!!) for a new album! Frankly, I was more than a little surprised. Dan and Liz seemed pretty pissed when Lisa released “Stay” as a single with their backing vocals on it. But, well, good on them for not holding grudges. *shrug* So, it’s called “Catch the Moon” and it’s a collection of traditional songs (American, Spanish, Japanese and French), a more “contemporary” cover ("New Morning” by Bob Dylan!) and a few original songs written by Lisa, Daniel, Warren and Liz. The CD accompanies a board book, with a story written by another old friend, NYC playwright Erin Courtney, and illustrated by none other than Liz’s mother, Bonnie Brooke Mitchell. It will be released on Lisa’s label, Artemis Records, and available initially at Barnes and Nobles, a wider release to follow in early 2004. And, okay, I cheated and cut and pasted a lot of that info straight from Liz’s email. : ) Here’s a link to more info: more info

Alrighty, that’s all the news from me for now!

np: The Menendez Brother story on (yay!) the True Stories network! It’s back, thank goodness!

So, has everyone seen the season finale for “The Osbournes” yet? Holy moly…they so had me going for a spli-i-i-it second! But then I was like, “Wait, I don’t believe this…” because if it truly had happened? The ASPCA would’ve caught wind of it and would’ve raised hell before it aired. Heck, even though it ended up being fake, I wouldn’t be surprised if the ASPCA was angry about it anyway! But anyway, it totally got me and Mike talking about other memorable season finales, and then I remembered…Sledge Hammer!!!!!

Does anyone else remember this show?! Holy moly, I would give anything to see some old episodes at this point! I remember it was funny, but I was also ten-years-old when it came out, and ten-year-olds think everything is funny. There’s even a memorial website set up for the show here. Ahhh, Sledge Hammer!

Also, VH-1 is currently airing their latest series “I Love the 70’s”. It’s just as funny and cute as their “I Love the 80’s” series, and they even got Kevin and Dave from “Kids in the Hall” as commentators!!! YAY! Anyways, there are marathons scheduled for Friday. And, uh, Saturday. And…even Sunday. So, if you’ve missed any, VH-1 will give you plennnnty of chances to catch up. ;)

    Bye for now!!! :)

np: the delightful 1984 Steve Martin/Lily Tomlin movie “All of Me”

I had forgotten what a cute movie this is! Additional movies that I forgot how much I like: • “Married to the Mob”: I loved this movie when I was younger, and it still holds up today!
Oscar: Quite possibly the only Sylvester Stallone movie I like!

But I’m annoyed because we used to get the “True Stories” film network or whatever-the-heck-its-called, and when I tried to tune into it this morning, I got one of those “you’re not subscribed to this channel” messages?! Wha?! Since when?! So now I guess Comcast is taking channels away from their basic subscribers or something…jerks! I wanted to watch “The Karen Carpenter Story” again! : ( I saw it once before (on, gee, that channel…), and it was one of the most well-done made-for-TV biopics I’ve ever seen! AND it has the amazing fortune of having a never-before-released Carpenters song on it that she recorded right before her untimely passing…apparently Richard gave the producers the rights to use the song at the time, but now he’s sitting on all these amazing recordings and won’t let them out! I’ve read that people bid like crazy for original VHS copies of this movie just to hear this snippet of an unreleased gem! Siggghhhh…. dear lovely Karen Carpenter! : (

yo la photographer: Matthew Salacuse • 2003

And speaking of hard-to-find movies, can I just reiterate why I love Seattle so? On the Yo La Tengo website, Ira made mention of an 1978 movie titled “Junior High School,” that he is credited on the IMDB as an actor in… Now, if you’ve ever seen VH-1’s “Before They Were Rock Stars” you might’ve seen footage of this movie in their feature on Paula Abdul, ‘cause she starred in this pic back when she was 15! So, why do I love Seattle? Because we have the raddest video store ever, Scarecrow Video! In just minutes, I clicked onto their site, checked their online inventory database, and saw that not only do they carry that film (!!!), but they even provided me with the location for where it sits in their store! WHOO-HOO! Viva la Scarecrow Video!!!! (And just for the record, it’s NOT “that” Ira Kaplan in the film…)

Mike and I went back to IKEA last night…because we are losers ; ) …and because we needed a few extra things and all. And we came up with the coolest idea for a new couch!!! I am SO EXCITED!!! Ooooh, it’s gonna be soooooo cute! But first we need to get rid of our old couch before we bring in a new one. Would anyone like to buy a wood futon frame? We have a nice chair that matches! ; ) And it was so nice, last week, when Mike and I were at IKEA (*cough*), we were standing in the couch department and heard some music playing over the loudspeakers…and it was Air Miami! Yay!!!

Sorry, I’m just babbling this morning! I need some caffeine, pronto. I’ve got oodles of work to do, so ta ta for now! ; )

np: A&E Biography on Alec Guinness

OMG, we love this man even more now! According to this show, Guinness was a huge Simpsons fan! Obi Wan liked The Simpsons!!! We love it! : D

So eeep! Again, sorry it’s been so long since I’ve last written!!! There just never seems to be enough time in the day. Don’t roll your eyes at me!!! ; ) I know I don’t have a “real” job right now, but that doesn’t mean I’m not working working working! ; ) So, I’m such a loser…I have all these shirts and skirts and cute matching headbands and lotsa other stuff that I’ve made sitting in my sewing room. I know the next step is take pictures of everything and code it on up to copacetique…but I’m suffering from some sort of weird shyness thing! I’m too shy to actually unveil my products to the public! Yes, I know it sounds ridiculous, and don’t bother sending me emails saying I should just “get over it". I think I just need some time or something. I’ll get over it, I promise. ; ) I just don’t have an enormous amount of confidence in my designs yet. That’s not too weird for someone just starting out…I think!

  • New Music Reviews! (finally…): Yes, it’s true! I think I’m finally caught up on all my CD reviews! I used to do these at my old job. Now I need to figure out a way to work these in to my new schedule. : / But blah blah blah, here they are!

Doggy >• Dump >• Language of Flowers >• Ted Leo & the Pharmacists >• Long Winters >• Notwist >• Portastatic >• Radio Dept. >• Saturday Looks Good to Me >• Yo La Tengo

Also, I’ve finally gotten around to updating the copacetic concert calendar. I love summertime! I love when the bands come out of hibernation and start touring again. : )

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think we just experienced our first Seattle earthquake!!!!

Whoa! That was so weird! Mike and I are just sitting here on the couch, typing on our respective laptops, and suddenly, we felt the building shake. And we live in a rather sturdy huge apartment building! (We’re on the top, the fourth, floor.) It just kinda felt like someone nudged the building or something. It wasn’t a dramatic rocking. Nothing fell. The cats didn’t even seem too bothered! And then it just stopped! That was sooo weird!!! : O

    Uh…anyway……….where was i?! : ) …….Oh, yes, let’s catch up on some music news!

  • Karla Shickele Gets Totally Screwed Over: The super-cool Peter Scholtes of Complicated Fun gave us a heads-up to the news that Zak Sally is still in Low!!! It’s true! Alan confirms the news on the Low site! So, Wow! And while I do feel bad that the fabulous Ms. K is gonna miss out on a free trip to Europe to open for Radiohead, I must say, I’m really happy that Zak is staying in the band. : ) And in other Low-ish news, Mike and I are gonna see Alan’s side project, The Black-Eyed Snakes for the first time ever this coming Saturday, and I am sooo girlishly giggly to see it! I. Love. Alan. And from what I’ve read, he abandons his (semi-)solemn Low stage presence and transforms into a total rock star with the Snakes!!! I’m giddy just thinking about it! Pictures and a full review to follow. (And, I know! I know! I am really behind on my concert reviews…I’ll try to catch up soon…)

So, anyway, in Janice-land, things have been very quiet lately! Being home all the time is making me even more shy and reclusive than I was before, which is a little worrisome! Good thing there are some shows happening soon, ‘cause if I don’t get out and get social, I’m gonna go insane!!! : )

But oooh, I got a haircut over Memorial Day weekend! I’m so happy about it, but I wasn’t at first! In fact, my hair pretty much consumed the three day weekend, which is sad! But on Friday, after picking Mike up from work, we went to Rudy’s and in a Sabrina-moment, I had them chop off my ponytail…finally! And while the girl at Rudy’s was super-nice and did a fine job, when I got home and washed all the styling products out of my hair, I was left with this big poof of hair and I cried. You see, my hair is of the super-thick-super-coarse Asian variety and sometimes I think American hairstylists just don’t know what to do with me. I talked to my Mom about it on Saturday morning, and she told me that I should see an Asian hairstylist, which is what she does when she gets anything bigger than a trim. Why I didn’t make the hair appointment that very afternoon is beyond me, but after a failed (and frying) attempt with a straightening iron, six different tries with styling products, and a whole new haircolor, I finally went to Salon Juno, the hair salon at the nationally known Uwajimaya Village, Seattle’s Asian market. And oh. my. god. I will just say, I will never again have my haircut by someone who isn’t Asian, or who doesn’t understand Asian hair! I’m so happy, and so relieved to be rid of that big poofball of hair. I used to refer to my hair as “kite-eating hair", ‘cause it’s like the kite-eating tree in the Charlie Brown cartoon, except my hair used to eat accessories. I’d break hairbands, hair clips, those rubber band thingies…it was ridiculous. But now it’s all chopped off! Yeah!!! : )

And yesterday, Jeremy made us an awesome quiche! I swear, I can’t get over how talented that boy is. He can make anything! But afterwards, we went to our awesome 24/7 bowling alley, Sunset Bowl, to play a game or two…and it was awful. It was league night, so the lady told us it would be about a half-hour, right? Okay, fine. So we went to the arcade. I was kicking some serious ass on Dead or Alive until that big flying Santa-looking character killed me. And then Jer and I kicked some butt on our beloved Dance Dance Revolution! Awwwww yeah! And Mike got a Marge Simpson bobblehead out of the gumball machine! : ) So then we go back to the lanes to see if they’re ready for us, and the lady gives me this whole “I didn’t say this, I said this” routine, and it’s like, LIAR! So now she hates me, and I don’t like her either, but we decide to wait a little bit longer to get a lane since we’ve already waited this long. League night was scary. They were raffling off meat!!! We’re talking pinky slabs of raw meat all wrapped up in cellophane that’s been sitting on the bowling alley counter all evening next to shoe spray and old cigarette butts. Ew. Even if I did eat meat (which I don’t), I’d say the same thing: EW. It was a pretty gross evening. We finally got sick of waiting and just left. : / That kinda sucked, but at least we had fun in the arcade!!! : )

Oh, and since I’ve talked about almost nothing but American Idol on the site for the past month, I guess I can’t let the finale get away without a comment! ; ) But really, I just didn’t care. Ruben and Clay were the final two, and as far as I’m concerned, they’re both winners. And even though Ruben “supposedly” got the most votes, I don’t think the world will ever truly know who the real winner should have been, because both Mike and I tried to call all night on our cell phones, and despite redialing for the entire three hour call time from Chop Suey, we only got through a handful of times. If all those votes had been counted, who knows who the winner might’ve been? But both boys are getting pretty much the same record deal, pretty much the same attention from the press, so who cares? And I, for one, think they are adorable together! Just look at that picture, will ya?! Clay and Ruben have way more chemistry together than Kelly and Justin ever will. They crack me up! If they do a movie together (and goodness knows I hope they do…), I will buy a ticket for that. They’re just so funny and sweet and cute! I read that after Clay messed up on the lyrics to “Vincent", Ruben was waiting for him in the wings and gave him a huge 20-second long hug! Awwwwwwww!!!! And we all know how I feel about boys hugging!!!!! ; )

So anyway!!! That’s all for today. Geez, I don’t write anything for a couple of weeks, and then I just won’t shut up. ; ) Oh well. I’ll try to write more often! Bye for now!!! : )

    np: American Idol

Yes! It’s Tuesday night, and American Idol is starting…I just happen to have my laptop in my lap (YES! we finally got it back…), soooooo…..why not! It’s an all American Idol post!!! Here are my exact thoughts, in real time, as tonight’s episode unfolds! : D

8:01 pm: Wow, I can’t believe next week is gonna be it! We’ll have our “American Idol"… and our Tuesday and Wednesday nights free again. ; ) Oh, NO! Someone had a homemade poster with Alfred E Newman on it for Clay!!! And Fat Albert for Ruben! Ha! Oh, god, Paula’s hat looks lame! And yesss! I love that Ryan called Randy on his “incomprehendible ramblings"…dawg, yo yo yo, whassup, dawg.

8:03 pm: Yay, Kimberely’s doing “Band of Gold"! She sounds great, too! Way to go, girl! ; ) OMG, “Al Capone"…that’s hilarious! How did Ryan record himself on his phone, yet still have both hands to point and wave at the camera?

8:09 pm: People. Please. Don’t watch American Juniors. Please.

8:10 pm: Random draw? No way. The draw was so fixed. Kim just “happened” to draw a song she performed back in the semi-finals with Frenchie? Ruben just “happened” to draw a soul song by Stevie Wonder? So fixed. Awww, he’s so cute though! ; ) Those dimples! But…I’m with Randy on this: I don’t think it was his best performance.

8:13 pm: “Vincent?” Wha? That’s messed up. I still think it’s fixed. Did Clay just mess up a lyric, or is that pause supposed to be in the song? Oh, he did mess up. Eeep. Aww, poor Clay. It was a random draw, it’s not like he could help choosing a boring song. Oooh, I love “Aiken fashion", this should be good! : )

8:17 pm: Mike made a great point about how the two “favorites” (Clay & Ruben) have had kinda “meh” performances so far, while the “underdog” (Kimberely) has had the best performance so far, thanks to the *cough* “random” song selection. But, as Mike so wisely puts it, it makes the show more interesting. Here’s my conspiracy theory: maybe the producers set it up that way ‘cause the public was getting so complacent about Kimberely being the one to go home this week.

8:21 pm: Oooh, “judges choice". Kimberely sounds pretty, but really breathy. Hmm. QUENTIN TARANTINO!!! ??? Wow! Uh, oh, I think Kim (I mean, “K-Lo") may have lost some votes with her diss on Burt Bacharach’s song!

8:25 pm: Oh god, “Smile"? Ruben’s voice sounds a little sandpapery, but it was good! OMG! Quentin just shouted “205″ at Ruben! That’s the cutest ever! What did Mike think of Ruben’s performance? “I didn’t think it was one of his best, to be honest. It had its moments, but I thought it was a little rough.” I agree! : ) And, I hate “That 70’s Show". Why isn’t this show cancelled? And, duh. Gee, I wonder who’s getting married? Could it be (spoiler starts) [[Fez & Laurie, so he can stay in the country?]] (end spoiler) Ugh.

8:32 pm: EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! Ryan, please don’t talk to the audience anymore. Isn’t this supposed to be a family show? Ew.

8:32 pm: “Mack the Knife"? The producers HATE Clay tonight. They’re totally trying to give him a bad night to create some kind-of drama so people tune in tomorrow. Really, he sounds fine though. Yay, Vanessa looks adorable! And awww, yay! Standing O! And “whooos"! Okay, I guess Clay’ll be fine!

8:35 pm: Kimberely sounds lovely. Nice job! Paula is so high! “Like a diamond, sparkly and smooth as silk"…’cause silk is like a diamond? Wha? Huh? Paula, you’re high.

8:44 pm: Oh, Ruben sounds awesome on this! Great song choice! But his voice sounds a little strained. Poor guy. Oooh, he’s seriously sweaty. Mike just pointed out that maybe that’s what the problem is, Ruben is just tired. Ooh, and now Clay! Hee, Mike just called him a mama’s boy! ; ) Yeah, Mike, like you’re one to talk! ; ))) (I’m just teasing, duh!) Ewww, the arrangement on this song is hideous. But damn, Clay is “bringing it", as the judges would say. I was just telling Mike, everyone seems really kinda sad this week. From what I’ve read, Clay, Rube and K-Lo are best friends right now, so tonight must be awful for them, knowing one of them is going home and all. But when they sit down with Ryan at the end of their performance, they just seem so subdued and somber. Mike said he’s sure exhaustion and pressure might have a lot to do with it too.

8:57 pm: God, poor Kimberley! How embarassing! Stupid Ryan. Off to go vote now! Bye! And, yes, I promise never to do a running commentary like this again! ; ) It seemed like a good idea an hour ago. Funny how time can change all that. Bye! ; )

np: the new “Simpsons” episode on FOX

I feel so badly for David Byrne. Ugh. His Simpsons guest appearance was seriously lame. Ick. It’s funny too, ‘cause I’m reading the unauthorized Jonathan Richman biography, and I’m right at the point where the Talking Heads take Jerry away from the Modern Lovers.

Anyhoo!!! I just spent the afternoon doing an enormous update to the site! There are tons of concert and movie reviews up right now! I’d do a running list of direct links, but there’s just too darn many of them to list out. The only thing I didn’t have a chance to do is CD reviews, which sucks ‘cause there’s sooooo many awesome new CDs out right now that you should all run out and buy right now! I’ll hopefully get them together over the next week!!! : )

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Mike and I hit the Greenwood Neighborhood Yard Sale Extravaganza thing. Okay, it has a proper name, I just can’t think of it. We found some really cool things, and got some great deals from our friends Steve & Nancy (I just adore the retro polkadot mugs!!!), but Mike scored the coolest thing of all! I’m gonna let him tell you guys about it though. ;)

That’s all for now! Oh, this episode was just not very good. : ( Meh.

    np: “Simpsons” re-runs on FOX

An awful thing happened to Mike and I when we got home this evening. We pulled into our parking spot, I pulled up the parking brake, went to pull the key out of the ignition…and the key broke off! So half the key is stuck in the ignition right now. It sucks this had to happen, but atleast it happened when we were home, so now we’re just hanging out, waiting for the locksmith guy to come out and help us. Apparently, he says he can fish out the broken bit and make us a new key outta the two broken parts all by tonight, so that’s cool! We weren’t planning on going anywhere tonight anyway, ‘cause it’s American Idol night!!! Go Clay!!! ;)

Anyway….ACK! : ) Sorry I haven’t updated the site in a long time, but we’ve been utterly slammed and just busy busy busy!!! Soooo much going on lately! But, here’s a quick update:

Anna (of that dog.) Covers The Cure: I read this on the March Records list: “In 2000, Summer’s House of Cookies Records released Songs For Summer, a memorial charity record featuring 15 of Summer’s favorite musicians, including Jason Falkner, Neutral Milk Hotel, the B-52’s and Jonathan Richman. LA singer Anna Waronker recorded a beautiful version of “Catch” byThe Cure for the record. It’s remained unreleased until now. You can listen to it at http://www.songsforsummer.com/anna. This is one of my favorite Cure songs too, so I had to share! It’s such a beautiful song. Sigh!

Ida’s Mothers Day Show: Okay you lucky East Coasters, the gorgeous Ida are playing a Mommy’s Day show on May 11st at Liz’s Mom’s church. So, join them at The Scarsdale Congregational Church, Dyckman Hall, One Heathcote Road, Scarsdale NY 10583, at 3:00 p.m. Adults pay $10 admission, but kids are free. There’s no advance tix, but Liz promises it’s a big hall and won’t sell out. Don’t miss it, ‘cause it benefits the Ecumenical Emergency Food Pantry of White Plains. You and your Mom will love it! : )

So, Mike and I have been to a tonne of shows lately, and I have loads of pics and reviews to share with you soon. Also, I have a gazillion movie reviews and CD reviews to share, too! I’ll add them to the site soon, I promise. Our laptop has been in the shop for almost 3 weeks now, which means when Mike and I are home in the evenings, there’s just the desktop to fight over, and frankly, I just haven’t been spending my evenings on the computer much these days! : ) But we should get it back soon, thank goodness! I’ll try to write more often in the meantime though, I promise!!! Bye for now, and Go Clay!!! ; ) Hee hee hee hee….!!!

np: Pizzicato Five “Playboy & Playgirl”

Yawn. I’m so tired. I wish I was home. I wish I was in bed. I wish I was watching our videotapes of The Simpsons. I wish I had Mike and Ethel and Tobin with me. Sigh.

So, one of my (many) super-nice co-workers burned me a copy of the My Neighbor Tortoro soundtrack, so in exchange, I burned him a copy of this CD. I actually wanted to make him a mix CD of loads of different J-Pop bands, but I just never had the time to. So the task sat and sat and sat on my to-do list for weeks, until finally my-nice-co-worker left a friendly-reminder-note for me tucked into the cd rack by my computer last Friday. Eeeps! So last night I just let this CD burn overnight while I slept, and then I woke up early this morning, made sure it burned okay, and made a sleeve for the CD case. But now I haven’t seen him all morning!!! Go fig! : )

So, I hope everyone had wonderful weekends? Mine sucked. Our Saturday started out pretty good, and we got tons of things scratched off our to-do lists: got some fish oil for Ethel, replaced the flourescent bulbs in the kitchen, got some batteries for our Palm Pilots, etc etc. But then Sunday, my energy levels were down down down and I hardly did anything at all. So the apartment still looks like crap, and my to-do list is still super-long. Arrrggh! So, Mike and I are just a teensy bit stressed out right now.

Mike started a new job assignment today, but it only last two days, so unless someone offers him a job in the next two days, Mike’ll be unemployed again by Wednesday. It’s very stressful. But in the meantime, we’ve been doing loads more eBay listings, and we’re selling off some of our old stuff to try and keep afloat. Sigh.

Oh yay! Today is 03/03/03! Whoohoo!

    np: Hem MP3’s

I’m so heartbroken! The first thing I read this morning was that Mister Rogers has passed away! : ( I’m so sad. He was only 74-years-old, and he passed from stomach cancer. I can’t even tell you how many hours I spent as a kid watching his show. I didn’t learn until I was much older that Mr. Rogers actually wrote all the scripts for the show, and was the executive producer. Of course, that only made me appreciate him more. And, because I was such a naive little kid, I didn’t even realize that was him doing all the voices for King Friday and Daniel Tiger and the rest til I was older, too. What a great man he was. What a calm, gracious, understanding, caring person the world lost today. How sad. For more information, you can visit CNN or Mr. Rogers official site.

np: a mix CD Chris Mac gave me this morning - - - it rawks!

First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Akira! Hooray! We hope Craig spoils you rotten today…and well, everyday really! ; ) HEE!

It’s another stressful, ugly day here at work. And I had mentioned how yesterday I had a nice talk with my supervisor and left feeling atleast a smidge more positive about working here? Well, I come in this morning, thinking positive happy thoughts, and by 10:00 am, everything is cruddy again. Cruddy is such a great word for how I’ve been feeling lately. Thank you, Lynda Barry!

Last night’s American Idol was b-o-r-i-n-g. And death to Corey Clark for even attempting to take on the mighty Steve Perry. I’m sorry, but if you can’t hit those high notes (like Clay did weeks ago), please don’t even embarass yourself trying. In other reality TV news, you must check out Mojo’s website! She chooses you.

That’s all for now ‘cause I gotta run and actually “work” - - - but when I get back, I’m getting on the message boards, Dad. ; )

np: Charles Allison’s “Braced In The Beams”

First off, some amazing news that I read on the Friends of March mailing list:

    from www.thedigitalbits.com…
Also today, we have more details for you on Warner’s The Ben Stiller Show DVD, which streets on 6/3. The 2-disc set will include all 12 episodes of the series, plus a previously unaired episode. And among the extras are 7 audio commentary tracks with the entire cast (including Ben Stiller and the writers), unaired sketches (with optional commentary), 10 outtakes, the A Brief History of The Ben Stiller Show featurette, the E! Behind the Scenes special, alternative versions of the pilot episode and the Melrose Heights special commentary Easter egg. SRP is $34.98. You fans of Mr. Show should find this right up your alley… ;-)

I MUST have this NOW! : O Finally, Mike and I can put to rest our sad 2nd-generation videotape copies of this amazing show! Eeeeee!!! I’m so excited! I plugged the release date into my Palmie and everything!

In other news, I finally had some time to plow through a few promos and other stuff, so if you care, read all about ‘em.:

    Charles Allison
    Capital City
    The Delgados

Bleh. I’m still in a bad mood, but not as bad as yesterday. I talked to my super-nice supervisor and it kinda made me feel better, although I’m still not happy working here. But I’m happier about being here for now, which is an improvement, right? Oops! Sorry for another downer post. I’m trying to be positive. Did I mention there’s a Ben Stiller DVD coming out??? ; )))

sp: John Peel’s Festive Fifty 2002 countdown (in the top ten now!)

Have you heard? “Grimmace” Paltrow is starring in a BBC-produced biopic about the great poet Sylvia Plath? Really, it makes my stomach turn. I wish they weren’t making this movie. And obviously, I’m not the only one.

This really upsets me, much in the same way that hideous Audrey Hepburn ABC biopic upsetted me. It just feels so disrespectful that films like this can be made against the family’s wishes. Stupid Gwyneth. Sigh!

    np: Low “Trust”

Wow Wow Wow!!! Mike and I just had the best weekend ever! As I mentioned last week, Mike’s family was having a reunion/birthday celebration over the weekend for Mike’s Gramma. So even though we could only stay for one night, boy oh boy, was it worth it! My face hurt like crazy from all the laughing and smiling I did in that 48 hour period. So, we got back late last night, and today, I am so completely tired. I’m looking forward to going home this evening and crashing on the couch in my jammies and watching “Joe Millionaire". When my brain is functioning better, I’m going to write more about the trip, so be sure to check back for that!

In a very tiny piece of site news, I updated the concert calendar. It was the least I could do today, being completely sleepy. : ) Bye!

sp: The Sea & Cake “One Bedroom”

I’m soooo tired! Whatta crazy past few days it’s been! : ) But the amazing, fabulous, wonderful Jonathan Richman and Tommy Larkins were in Seattle Monday and Tuesday night. Mike and I have great love for JoJo. We’ve seen him…goodness, maybe almost 5 or 6 times now? He’s just such a treasure, and Tommy, he’s my hero! Sigh! You can read about the show here.

So, since we were out every evening, we had to tape our favorite tv shows and just watch them later. But WOW. On Joe Millionaire: I’m shocked that Alison got kicked out of the chateau! I thought for sure it would be Zora. I like Zora a lot. She’s my new favorite as my old fave Melissa M. (Princess-Leia-hair-girl) has proven herself to be quite the meany! Rowrrr!!! : O And as for American Idol: Sadly, I’m not enjoying it as much as I did last year’s yet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still loving seeing all the bad auditions and stuff, but AI was blown into such a phenomenon last year, that this year, the people auditioning know too much. They’re being bad on purpose just to get on TV. Kinda takes all the fun out of it. : / But anyway, I’ll keep watching for now, but if I don’t find myself rooting for someone (like I did for Tamyra last year), I might just not watch. Plus, it sucks up two nights a week. : /

OMG, did anyone read what Moby wrote on his website about Blind Date? I swear, he really should be my new best friend. Moby: “‘Blind Date’ made me want to: a-invite the writers to dinner, and b-renounce my membership in the human race.” HAR! I love him!

So, I’m so so so excited! This weekend, Mike and I are going to Detroit for his gramma’s 80th birthday! (Shhh! It’s a surprise, so don’t tell any little ‘ol ladies in Detroit that we’re coming…) Actually, it’ll be a family reunion/birthday celebration for Mike’s family since a whole bunch of his relatives are flying in for the event. Mike says he hasn’t seen some of these relatives in years and years and years! I’m so excited to meet everyone, especially Mike’s gramma! So yay yay yay!!!

I guess I should also say, I added my reviews for the new Sea & Cake and for a new band called Theselah. I was gonna get some more stuff on the site, but I am sooo t-i-r-e-d and sleep-deprived, and I don’t feel like writing anymore today, so bye! ; )))

OH! I meant to add this to the site! Check out this cool link our fab friend Corey sent! It’s a map of Springfield done by two fans of the show!!! The attention to detail is just astounding! : O

And in other Simpsons-related linkage, check out this cool interview with the always-awesome Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo here! Although, I’m dying to know: what Coca-Cola song?!?! I don’t remember this! : O

np: “The Look For Less” one of my favorite shows on the Style channel

I love this show, ‘cause it shows you tips on looking runway-stylish on real-world prices, and ooh, what a great way to introduce the new COPACETIQUE site! Please check it out. Eventually, we’re going to have loads and loads of cute stuff on there, and more fashion articles and stuff. Yay!

So, I’ve actually been home sick the past two days. I hate being sick. I’m not a very good patient. I like to do stuff and be productive, so laying around doing nothing isn’t really my cup of tea. Instead, I’m laying here lamely watching stupid movies on Lifetime. (Like this one where Fred Savage plays an abusive boyfriend who murders his high school girlfriend Candace Cameron…mwah hah hah! And it ends with a cameo from Sally Jessy Raphael! I love bad movies, and Lifetime is the place for them.)

Sigh. Oh well. We saw Interpol last Friday, and they were, indeed, amazing. We’ll have a review up soon. If I had more mental-energy, I’d do it right now, but I’m just like “duh” today. Whine whine whine, huh? ; ) Okay, I’ll shut up for now.

np: Kind of Like Spitting’s “Birds of a Feather” on repeat

I need to make a loop tape of this song and Kind of Like Spitting’s “I Know You Heard Me The First Time"…these two songs are soo good they drive me crazy!!!!! CRAAAAZY!!!

So, watched American Idol last night…honestly, I’m up in the air. I could see either of them winning. Never underestimate the power of teenage girls. And those “original” songs they had to perform? Yecch! Soooo boring!!! But really, the best thing about last night was the yummy Mac & Cheese and that tasty dessert, too!

And, OMG! Nikki McKibben used to be a stripper?!?! Apparently, she admitted it on Access Hollywood recently. And then they showed the strip club where she used to work, and actually interviewed a “co-worker” and her old boss! EWW! Gross!

Okay, enough American Idol…here’s a super cute link with kittens!!! Here’s some punk rock kittens and here’s some kittens on the beach. The kittens on the beach would be much cuter without the scary-mouthed tabby in the bottom right-hand corner. Yikes!! : /

I meant to have the Bumbershoot pictures processed so I can gush about how good it was, but I didn’t have a chance last night! Prolly tonight! : ) Bye for now!!!

Yes, I’m still listening to it. Didn’t you hear me yesterday? It’s amaaaaazing! ; )

So, it’s Wednesday, and I’m in a chatty mood, so bear with me folks! First off, did anyone else watch American Idol last night? I know, I know…the show is cheesier than the Papa John’s pizza we ate while we watched it. But I’m hooked! And for the first time ever, I actually called in and voted last night…for Nikki! YES! That so-called “punk rocker” who can’t hold a note, sings flat and has criminal fashion sense. I’m just still reeling that my fave Tamyra got voted off, and now I wanna make a mockery of the show by voting for the least talented person.

Okay, off to the dentist! Yes, that’s still going on!!! : (

    np: Sarah Shannon self-titled CD

Sooo chatty! : ) Plus, there’s just so much going on right now, so let’s have some more news:

So, Sub Pop is gonna release their first comedy album ever of the fabulous David Cross! How cool is that?! Titled “Shut Up, You F—ing Baby!", the album will be released on November 5th. You can read more about it here. And while the article doesn’t state it, Mike and I think the performance on the album might be the very one we attended! Fancy that!

    >• I’m thrilled, delighted and embarassed: we’ve been added to the links page at Jenny Toomey’s wonderful site (listed as “copacetique"). Of course, she has to link to the goofy concert review I wrote…oh, every review I write is goofy. : ) But, seriously, yay! And thanks, Jenny! Don’t miss her at Ladyfest DC, where she’ll be playing with a reunited Tsunami (oh my gosh!) or at this year’s Bumbershoot here in Seattle! : )

    • The commercial is old, but I just found out about this today: The Shins actually wrote a song for a Gap commercial! I’ve seen this commercial a gazillion times, but never realized it! It’s the one where Ashton Kucher and Zooey Deschanel and others ride bicycles down the street? You can watch it here. Let’s hear it for our favorite indie rockers cashing in their royalty checks! Cha-ching!!!

And that’s all the news I’ve got for you guys today! Hopefully, there’ll be a new “road trip” uploaded soon! It’s done. I just need to check with my friends and make sure they don’t mind me posting silly pictures of them online. ; ) Bye-eee!

    np: still Archer Prewitt’s “Three”

Morning everyone! : ) Gee, I’m so chatty lately! What’s up with that?

This Is True Love: (from IMDB.com) Ozzy Osbourne has come up with the perfect gesture to support his wife Sharon’s battle with cancer - he’s vowed to shave off his hair for charity. The former Black Sabbath frontman was devastated this month to discover Sharon has been diagnosed with cancer of the colon - and that the chemotherapy she now faces is likely to result in her losing her hair. But Ozzy is determined that Sharon will not face the prospect of hair loss alone - he has promised to lose his trademark long locks as well, to raise money for cancer research. According to British tabloid the Daily Star, the MTV star told his wife, “We’re in this together. If you go bald, I’ll go bald - I’ll be by your side every step of the way.”

That is just so freaking romantic! Or, to put it in Ozzy-speak, “*bleeping* romantic"! : ) Just the other night, Mike and I were watching a re-run of The Osbournes and we couldn’t help but remark on how much in love Sharon and Ozzy are! It’s truly sweet the way they are on the show, and then after reading this…! My goodness, he’s such a romantic! : )

Just wanted to share that. I’m sure I’ll have more things to talk about later though.

    np: Eggstone MP3s

Happy Monday everyone! : ) Well, not really for this girl. : Q Everyone at my office is in sucha crabby mood. I can’t wait for 5 o’clock so I can get the heck away from here. But ’til then, I’m listening to the happy sounds of Eggstone to keep me feeling up.

A-aand, we’ve got some fun new stuff on the site:

    • A review of the new Crispin Glover movie Bartleby.
    • Another concert review with our pals in Guided By Voices.

In other copacetic news, Mike and I finally broke down and bought ourselves a DVD player. We fought it for months, dancing closer and closer to the idea of it, but then quickly backing off. But last week the Mr. Show seasons 1 and 2 were released on DVD together, and I did just get a bonus from work, sooo… : ) So far, we’re really enjoying it too. Our next stop: purchasing the Sifl & Olly season 3 DVD!!!! Yeah! : )

And speaking of Mr. Show, looks like Bob & David are hitting the road this autumn! Visit their site for tour dates. They’ll be in Seattle two days before my birthday! : )

Not much else to write about… but man, I just can’t wait to go home!!!!! : ( Bye for now! : (

Let’s face it: what site can’t benefit from having Screech Powers on their opening page? Twice? ; ) My fabulous friend Noel sent this link, and frankly, I’d be pretty darn selfish if I didn’t share the love, so here you go.

So, Happy Memorial Day! Hopefully many of you have the day off and are relaxing on the couch, watching the X-Files marathon on FX or something. I’m actually at work right now. It’s very quiet. Which has given me plenty of time to work on some new reviews for the site! : ) So, here’s what we’ve got for you today:

    • New music reviews for Dump, GBV, and Weezer.

    • Concert reviews for Pinback and Mates of State.

    • Our super-rad friend Chris helped us with the coding for a new, improved version of our Star Wars Midnight Madness article.

And that’s it for now, but since Mike has had the day off, maybe he’ll have some time later tonight to review the latest Star Wars movie. (He and Jer went to see it together this afternoon.) See ya later! : )

You may remember my little rant about the Denny’s commercial featuring Emmanuel Lewis a little while back. Well, their new spot is worse…much worse. Now they have Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy shilling for them. This is sad and disturbing for so many reasons. First of all, these beloved childhood icons of mine, once symbols of quality, imaginative programming, have now sunk to the level of washed-up TV celebs like Emmanuel and the actors who played Seinfeld’s parents (how quickly they fell). Secondly, they are using Miss Piggy (obviously voiced by someone other than Frank Oz, incidentally) to promote the Grand Slam breakfast–with bacon. Let me repeat that: Miss Piggy. Bacon. Doesn’t anyone at Henson Productions remember the freaking Muppet Movie, in which Kermit spends the entire film trying to avoid becoming the spokesfrog for Doc Hopper’s frogs’ legs restaurants? Poor Jim must be whirling in his grave, and I feel violated in a way I haven’t felt since…well, a couple of months ago, when they made poor E.T. levitate that stupid minivan. Sigh.

np: Super Furry Animals (’cause we’re seeing ‘em tonight!)

Something else I just read and wanted to share: The Style Network to present Kevyn Aucoin: A Style Tribute, a half-hour special looking at the life and work of the celebrity makeup whiz who died Tuesday. The special premieres May 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Just a quick note: I don’t know why, but apparently a hefty percentage of people end up at c o p a c e t i c looking for commercials. Like that Nissan Grim Reaper commercial. Or that Denny’s Emmanuel Lewis commercial. See? I just increased our hits there! ; ) So, if you are one of these people, may I refer you to a new site? Ads.com Yup, you can look up and watch all the ads you need.

That’s all for now, but check back with us later for some new stuff on the site. I’m feeling tired, so I think I’m gonna stay home tonight and work on the laptop from the comforts of the couch. (sigh!)

np: The Adventures of Pete & Pete (It’s back on the air! Life is good!)…oops, now it’s The Osbournes

After one month and 124 CDs, the final installment of the CD Odyssey is up (a day late). It’s been quite the enjoyable project–I’m already feeling the void!

We had quite an experience at Star Wars midnight madness at our local Toys R Us last night…we’ll have pictures and stories up soon! (Don’t worry, I didn’t spend too much!)

np: E! Fashion Emergency - - - oh, Leon! When will you help me?!

Hey everyone! Just thought I’d pipe up with an update: so, I saw an Orthopedic Specialist on Monday, and it seems I’ve torn cartiledge in my knee. So now they want to do an MRI scan to really look inside and see the extent of the damage, but unfortunately, I’m still waiting for confirmation that I’m receiving the workman’s comp, so ’til then, I’m kind-of in limbo. Grrr… I’m soo ready to get this awful knee-immobilizer off of me! : ( I took it off for a little while yesterday because I was at the sewing machine and needed my right foot to work the pedal. Bad move. Last night, I seriously paid the price and iced my knee for over an hour. (sigh) And I’m sick of my fashion choices being limited by the brace!!! : ( Grrrr…. ; )

So, that’s the update! Now, on to happier news:
    • Our friend Mike posted this to the Seattle Pop List and it seriously cracked my husband and I up: http://www.theonion.com/onion3813/record-store_clerks.html.
    Oh, the humanity!

    • Did you hear? Trey & Matt of South Park have officially killed off dear sweet Kenny!!! I’m mortified! Apparently, he’s to be replaced by Butters. Butters?! Noo-ooo-oo!!! And it kinda makes me sad the way Trey & Matt are like, “We’re so sick of Kenny…Why do people even care about Kenny?” Um, hello? Didn’t Kenny save South Park from Satan and Sadaam Hussein in the movie?! Read more about it here.

    • So, what the heck happened to my FOX Sunday nights?!?! Last Sunday was awww-ful! Especially The Simpsons, but especially The X-Files. Ugh. I used to love The X-Files, but sadly, this season has been sooo bad! : ( They’ve seriously jumped the shark.

I’ve gotta run — loads of stuff to do this afternoon, but if I do have time, I’m gonna write about last week’s fabulous Jonathan Richman show and the amazing Douglas Coupland book I just finished. Oh, oh, oh — it was SO good, I just didn’t want it to end! : ( Lessee, what else?!?… guess that’s it for now! ta! ; )

Remember ALF? He’s back…in Pog form! Well, not really, but he has joined fellow 80’s TV icon Mr. T in hawking 1-800-Collect. Who’s next, Emmanuel Lewis? But wait, he’s shilling for Denny’s, in a spot wherein the overly perky Denny’s waitress keeps thinking poor Emmanuel is a child. It’s supposed to be funny but it’s just sad because you know that that must be exactly what his life is like. Including the eating at Denny’s part. On the other hand, the new Visa ad featuring Kevin Bacon gets the thumbs-up from us here at Copacetic, with its clever play on the whole “6 Degrees” phenomenon. (I’ll let Janice tell you about the Blockbuster ad with the Flashdancing hamster…)

So, which washed-up former celebrity are you expecting to pop up in a cheesy TV ad next? Urkel? Jocko? Fran Drescher? Cast your vote in our message board!

The Truth Is Out There…Well, Soon Anyhow…
I’ll be honest. I stopped watching The X-Files this season. Yes, I’m probably one of the reasons why it’s being cancelled. : ) But, now they’ve sucked me back in again, because Mulder is coming back! : )

You can read more about it at The X-Files website, but David Duchovny co-wrote and will direct the April 28th episode, and then he’ll actually appear in the two-hour series finale on May 19th. Mark your calendars, boys and girls! This might be the saddest moment on television since MST3K went off the air…

See? This is how loved I am. I come home from work, sit at the computer, and immediately, Ethel jumps on to my lap and Tobin joins us on the desk. This is the view from my lap right now. I am surrounded by furry goodness.

    • Before you snicker and blow off the new Richard Gere movie, The Mothman Prophecies, you might wanna know that Alan & Mimi of Low wrote some songs especially for the soundtrack. Mike and I are actually considering seeing it now. (cha-apstick!)

Those fine fellows of Sifl & Olly have released some new merchandise to help fill the void we’ve felt since MTV cancelled their show! They’ve released the never-before-seen Season 3 on DVD, a CD collection of songs from Season 1, t-shirts and so much more. Mike and I think we’re going to have to break down and get a DVD player. Many, many years ago, I was completely against CD’s. I hated that our local Sound Warehouse was clearing out the vinyl to make room for the longboxes. I was deadset against ‘em. But then the Cocteau Twins boxset came out. I actually bought the boxset before I even had a player! So, the new Sifl & Olly DVD is my old Cocteau Twins boxset. Sigh!

    • It’s snowing in Seattle! Isn’t that odd? Apparently, snow in Seattle is about as uncommon as snow in Texas. (Well, at least in the city. Up in the mountains, it’s a whole ‘nother story…) There’s absolutely nothing accumulating on the ground, yet they cancelled school anyway. It’s not even that cold here. I was driving home from work with the car window rolled down, and tiny snowflakes hitting my face. It felt kinda good, actually.

    • Just wanted to let you guys know, there are some new CD reviews up today, too! Actually, I wrote them a while ago and just haven’t had a chance to upload them ’til yesterday. And then I didn’t have time to let you guys know they were up until today! Sheesh! : ) Actually, there’s even more exciting new stuff that’s going up on the website soon. And I’ll be sure to let you know when it does. See ya laters.

I think my favorite commercial on the air right now is the one for Riesen chocolate candies. It’s the one where the 3 dudes at the airport have the candies offered to them by another offscreen dude. Not only do the 3 dudes accept candy from a stranger, they also accept goods from an unknown party at the airport! Is this really the message they want to send, especially in this post-9/11 world? Oh, those wacky European candy companies. This replaces last year’s front-runner for, I think, Nissan, in which a car touted as, like, 200-something horsepower races across that same flat desert they use in every car commercial and outdistances the Grim Reaper, who is riding one horse. You know, now that these new-fangled automobiles are finally able to go faster than a horse, I think they might actually start to catch on!

Mike here with some thoughts on last night’s debut of Real World Chicago. Yawn! As you may know, Janice & I got sucked into the last season of Real World ("Back to New York"), but not this time around. At least last time the characters ("cast members", whatever) had some depth…you know, Nicole, Coral, and Malik were interesting people, Lori at least had an ambition (albeit half-assed), and Mike was a dolt but we got to watch him mature. The only real bore was Kevin. This time around the cast has all the depth and variety of a box of Wheat Thins. I can predict the whole season for you right now: the Playa will clash with all the Bimbos, especially Gay Bimbo and Hick Bimbo; Drunk Bimbo will crash and burn (how many times does she need to tell us she started drinking at 14?); Uptight Gay Boy will alienate his housemates by not having come out of the closet right away; one of the other Bimbos may “experiment” with Gay Bimbo; Bimbo Bimbo will try to hook up with Jock Himbo…bleh. The only suspense is who’s going to be the first to trip on those red bumps on the floor. In fact, the only thing worth watching is the apartment, which actually elicited shouts of “oh my god!” from both of us. But even the apartment is bimbo-listic, with the dual shower, jacuzzi, and sex books strewn about. Feh! What is this, Temptation Island? Were the other seasons of Real World like this, or more like last season? Oh well, at least we won’t be slaves to the TV on Tuesday nights. : )

Meh. I’d written a longer entry earlier this evening, but then blogger crashed out so, now it’s gone. But I did want to say that we have a new copacetic person for 2002: Kevin McDonald! I actually wrote this back in November 2001, but never got around to uploading it. But now it’s up, so go meet him and see why we like him so much!

Also, Ethel is back from the hospital and doing fine! : ) The fur on her tummy is already growing back in, and if she’ll just stop scratching ‘em, the scabs on her face should heal up quickly! Thank goodness!!! : ) : ) : )

Well, I wish I could write more tonight, but I still have loads of stuff to do before sleep. : P Too bad blogger ate my earlier entry!!! Man, this Saves the Day video on MTV2 looks awful! Was this someone’s freshman Video 101 project or something?!?! Sheesh!!! Sorry! Random thoughts! ; ) Bye!
